If you’re moving locally, chances are you’re going to stay with the same gas or electric company. Be sure you let them know well in advance that you’ll be moving and when they need to transfer the billing to your new address. Although you may like the people who are moving into your old house or apartment, you don’t really want to be paying for their water and gas for the next month. By giving your utility company enough notice, you can rest assured that everything will be working when you arrive at your new home. If you have to switch companies, make sure the old service is shut off just before you leave and the new services are turned on before you need them.
CHECK EVERY LIGHT AND APPLIANCE
This is more applicable to your new residence, but it’s also important to check that the lights and appliances (those you’re leaving behind) are working properly in your old residence. When you arrive at your new home, and have coordinated with the utility company to have everything turned on, be sure to check every light and appliance to see that the electricity and gas are working. If not, it’s important to contact your utility company right away. Be sure to have your account number and address handy so you can relay important information quickly.
MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO OVERDUE FEES
One way to make sure everything is transferred or shut off properly is to check on any overdue or outstanding fees with your current utility company. They will need a forwarding address to send your final bill, but if there are fees you haven’t paid, you’ll have to settle those before they’ll close your old account. You’ll also want to schedule a final meter reading so your last bill is accurate.
