Packing Heavy Items for Moving

At Billy Goat Moving in Fort Collins, our motto is, “If it can be moved, we can move it.” We always come prepared to move even the heaviest of items, and we always take care to treat every belonging with care and respect. If you’re getting ready to move, then it’s important to pack your heavy items appropriately and to make sure that those items that can’t be packed, such as a piano or a safe, are ready to go once moving day arrives.

STURDY BOXES ARE KEY

You may think that any old cardboard box will do when it comes to moving, and that may be the case when you’re packing towels or picture frames. When it comes to books or glassware, the sturdier the box, the better. A heavy-duty or double-ply cardboard box will provide the durability you need for those stacks of books on your shelves or that heavy serving dish that you got for your wedding. You’ll also want to wrap any heavy, fragile items in plenty of bubble wrap or another padding material.

TRANSPORTING ARTWORK

Northern Colorado is well-known for its artwork, and if you own large paintings or several small bronze statues, then you might be worried about how they’ll be transported to your new home. Sculptures don’t often fit into a standard box, and even the strongest corrugated cardboard may not be enough for a solid bronze piece. In these instances, a custom crate is often the best option, and our team will gladly help you build the appropriate crating solution for your art, sculpture, or taxidermy.

INVEST IN QUALITY TAPE

When it comes time to close your boxes, it’s important to have a high-quality packing tape that will hold everything in place. The last thing you want is for the bottom of the box that’s holding your glassware to come open and for everything to shatter on the sidewalk or driveway. Speaking of the bottom of the box, it’s always best to carry heavy boxes from the bottom, rather than hold them on the sides or try to keep them against your body for support. Our moving experts can carry your heavy boxes with ease, and we’ll make sure everything is packed properly into the truck.

DISASSEMBLE WHAT YOU CAN

While you may not be able to disassemble your piano, there are heavy items that can be taken apart before moving. If you have a large wardrobe or dresser, see if you can remove the legs or the mounted mirror. You can pack these items separately and make carrying the item easier for the moving crew. Believe us when we tell you that we will be grateful for any preparation that you can do before we arrive. If you need help with packing or disassembling, then we’ll be more than happy to help.

At Billy Goat, it is our goal to provide Colorado with exceptional moving services. While we’re located in Fort Collins, we serve the entire state, so if you’re going from Loveland to Durango or Sterling to Steamboat Springs, we can transport everything you own.
