Back in December, we wrote about packing your kitchen and how you can set yourself up for success when it comes time to move to a new place and unpack all your pots, pans, and dishes. SET ASIDE THE ESSENTIALS
Before you begin putting things in boxes and bins, make sure you set aside those essential items that you’ll need during moving day and the first few days in your new place. Travel-size bottles of shampoo, body wash, and toothpaste can be packed in your overnight bag, and it’s important to remember soap, deodorant, and other toiletries. Don’t forget to pack a towel or two in your travel bag, since you’ll likely want to take a shower once the move is done. You’ll also want to be sure that any medications you or your family members need are packed in the overnight bags.
THROW THINGS AWAY
When you’re going through the medicine cabinet or the cupboard underneath the sink, chances are you’re going to find items that need to be thrown away. There might be some old makeup tubes or cleaner bottles that you can toss, and if you come across that hair dryer you forgot you had, make sure it still works before you pack it. If it doesn’t, throw it in the trash can and you’ll have one less thing to move!
PACKING YOUR TOWELS
If you have a plethora of bath towels and washcloths, take the time to sort through them to see which ones are worth keeping. The old, ratty ones can be set aside and used when you’re cleaning the house before you move, or you can donate them to a local pet shelter for bedding. The towels you’re going to keep can be folded up and used as padding to protect fragile or breakable items that you pack into boxes. However, make sure that you don’t put too many towels into one box, as they can add quite a bit of weight.
STOCK UP ON BAGGIES
When you’re packing shampoo or soap, make sure you have plastic baggies on hand so that you can prevent leaks and spills inside your boxes or suitcases. The last thing you want is to open a box and find that your shampoo has leaked all over the place. Make sure the plastic is durable and that there’s little to no chance of the baggies coming open or breaking during transit.
