1. DECIDE WHAT NEEDS TO BE DISASSEMBLED
You may not have much time until moving day arrives, and it’s important to decide what needs to be disassembled and what doesn’t. If your dining room table won’t fit through the front door, it can be beneficial to take the legs off and carry out the top and the legs separately. Take some time to measure the pieces you want to take apart, and then measure your doorways for clearance. It may turn out that you don’t have to disassemble every piece of furniture you own! You’ll also want to be sure the piece can be taken apart since some furniture can be difficult to put back together.
2. FIND THE RIGHT TOOLS
This can apply to any manual project, but having the right tools for furniture disassembly can make the process much less stressful. Screwdrivers – both flat head and Phillips head – along with ratchets and hex wrenches should be the primary tools you need, and it’s important to make sure you have the proper bit or socket for each piece of furniture. You don’t want to strip the heads of the screws, as this can make it difficult to put things back together once you’re moved into your new house.
3. KEEP THE HARDWARE IN A SAFE PLACE
Once you’ve taken out the nuts, screws, or bolts that were holding your furniture together, make sure you keep everything in a safe place. You can tape the hardware to the piece it belongs to, or you can separate parts into plastic bags and label them appropriately. A tackle box can also be a good idea, but you’ll want to be sure everything is labeled so you know what goes where when it’s time to reassemble.
4. FIND HELP
If you’re taking apart a giant sofa or sectional, or you’re working on a large entertainment center, be sure to find help. Furniture can be very heavy, and the last thing you want before your move is for something to fall on your foot or hit you in the head, putting you out of commission for moving day. Two or three people can also make the process go faster and help you feel more prepared for your move.
