The Biggest Moving Mistakes

At Billy Goat Moving in Fort Collins, we’ve helped countless people move all across Colorado, and we’re always happy to help any way we can. We’ve moved people with only a few belongings, and we’ve moved people with enough belongings to fill two houses. In each situation, our goal is to help the person or family have the best moving experience possible, and we always try to help them avoid moving mistakes. There are many things that can go wrong during a move, and our professional team does whatever it can to avoid those mistakes. In this blog, we’ll look at some of the biggest moving mistakes you can make, whether you hire a moving company or not.

1. PACKING EVERYTHING YOU OWN

When you have to move on short notice, you might try to pack everything as quickly as you can. This often means you don’t take time to sort through things and throw out or donate those items you no longer want or need. If you do have time, but still pack everything you own, that can increase the time and money it takes to complete your move. Even just one day of sorting can make a big difference!

2. NOT PACKING AN OVERNIGHT BAG

With all of your belongings in boxes, you want to be sure you have an overnight bag with all the essentials. A few changes of clothes, your toiletries, and a towel are a good place to start, and you’ll want to have a bag for each member of your family (especially your kids). You might not be able to unpack for a few days, and wearing the same clothes two or three days in a row can put a real damper on your mood. Pack valuables, such as jewelry, snacks, and medicine in the bag, as well as pet food for your furry friends.

3. NOT PREPARING YOUR PETS

Speaking of pets, it’s important to make sure they’re ready for the move as well. They’re a member of the family too, and they can tell when you’re stressed. Try to keep their routine as normal as possible, and if you can, take them over to your new house or apartment and let them sniff around. Simply loading them in the car on moving day and never bringing them back to their old house can be a lot for a pet to take. Make sure they have food, water, and their favorite toys as well.

4. NOT LABELING BOXES

Even if you didn’t pack everything you own, you’ll still want to know where things go in your new house. Labeling boxes is very important, and skipping this step can make unpacking a nightmare. It also helps your movers to know where things go when they’re unloading the truck. You don’t want all of your kitchen boxes to end up in the bedroom, or to have a huge pile of boxes in your living room.

5. NOT CHANGING YOUR ADDRESS

Changing your address nowadays is fairly easy, but it’s also fairly easy to forget to do. You’re focused on getting everything packed and prepared for moving day, and you forget to go online or visit the post office and change your address. You may not realize it until you aren’t getting any mail at your new address, or you get an online bill from your utility company for your old house. Speaking of utility bills, make sure your service companies know you’ve moved, even if it’s within the same service area.

At Billy Goat, we want to help make moving as easy as possible, and we’ll do whatever we can to help you avoid these mistakes and others. When moving day arrives and you’re prepared, we will be too.
