We’ve all been there – you’re going on a trip and you don’t have or take the time to pack the things you need. It’s the night before you’re leaving and you’re running around the house, trying to find clean clothes (or do laundry), collecting the things you need, and stuffing them in a suitcase. When you’re moving to another house, that packing anxiety can be multiplied tenfold, especially if you have to move on short notice. At Billy Goat Moving in Fort Collins, we can help with packing and moving, but if you’re on a tight schedule, we’ve provided some tips to get everything boxed up and ready to go.
First Step – Don’t Panic
The first, and perhaps most important. step when packing in a hurry is “don’t panic.” We know that it can seem overwhelming to pack an entire house in a few days, but with a calm and rational mindset, you can get it done. You know when moving day is, and with a reasonable and positive outlook, you can get everything done before the movers arrive. You know how much time you have each day and you know what packing materials you have (or don’t have) and by taking stock of what you have and what you need, you can get started on putting things in boxes.
Pack an Essentials Suitcase
One of the best things you can do when moving is to pack a suitcase full of essential items. Putting a few changes of clothes, toiletries, medications, and other necessary items into one bag will ensure that you have what you need during and after the move. You may not be able to unpack right away when you arrive at your new residence, and with an essentials bag or suitcase (just like you’d have on a business trip or vacation), you can rest assured that you’ll always have a few comforts and necessities with you at all times.
Use Towels and Clothes as Padding
If you’re worried about how you’re going to fit all of your clothes, linens, and bedding into boxes and suitcases, take some of the stress away by using towels and certain clothes as padding between your dishes, chinaware, and other breakables. There can be a lot of unused space in boxes holding heavy items, and adding a few towels or shirts won’t add much weight, but will provide better protection for fragile objects. This will also cut down on the items you need to pack into suitcases!
When you’re packing in a hurry, labeling everything properly can be something that’s pushed to the wayside. By keeping a black permanent marker on you at all times, you can easily write on each box as it’s filled, and when you reach your new house, you’ll know exactly what’s in each one. Instead of wondering where your DVDs and CDs are, you’ll be able to easily find the box and put it in the right room.
