When you’re preparing to move, you want to do everything you can to make sure everyone in the family is comfortable and ready for the change. That can include sitting down with your young children and explaining why you’re moving, so they can get used to the idea before moving day arrives. But what about your four-legged friends? If you have a dog or cat, it’s important to prepare them for the big move as well. In this blog, we’ll cover some basic tips for getting your pets ready for moving day.
Moving with Dogs
If you have a dog, no matter how old they are, it can be beneficial to take them to the new house or new neighborhood and let them sniff around. They will become familiar with the new surroundings and new scents before you actually move, and this can make the transition easier for them. Also remember, on moving day, to safely crate them so they’re secure during the drive to the new house. The practice trips in the car from your old house to your new residence should also help.
Moving with Cats
Cats are obviously different than dogs, and moving with your feline friend can take a unique approach. Cats often prefer a familiar environment, and taking them out of their territory can seriously upset them. If your cat has never been in a carrier, be sure to help them get used to it by putting them in it and taking them for short drives, and it can help to leave it out in the house so they can inspect it when they feel like it.
Once moving day arrives and you’re ready to go, don’t forget that your pets will be able to sense any stress in the family. It can be helpful to include a toy or favorite blanket in their crate or carrier, and if they’re able to be out of the carrier, don’t forget their food, water, litter box, and other necessities. You’ll also want to be sure that you’ve updated their microchip registration with your new address, in case they escape while things are being moved. Confining them to the bathroom is often a good choice, but you’ll want to be sure to check on them regularly.
If a dog, cat, ferret, or other furry creature will be moving to your new home with you, make sure they’re as prepared and adjusted as possible. At Billy Goat, we’ll make sure to take extra care if there is a pet in the house, and will do whatever we can to make your move as stress-free as possible.
